The opening track and Yanling’s upcoming 2024 album are titled Cymatic, which refers to the visible patterns created upon matter via their sonic vibratory movements. A way of translating sound waves into visual patterns. These wave-like traces represent the frequencies that our ears interpret as sound. While sound conveys something indescribable, for Yanling, the connection between sound and its visual form symbolizes a deep sense of her inner self. This new work reflects her search for something elusive and intangible—untouchable and out of reach—comparable to an infinite, undulating surge that oscillates back and forth from its origin.
The musical language of Cymatic features extended notes, ambient drones, and sweeping synthesized grandeur, serving as a sound bed for memories that have finally been put to rest.

The album’s resonant textures produce a radiant vision of a glimmering halo surrounding us all. In contrast, some glitchy elements convey a cold, grainy feeling, reminiscent of the smell of concrete or damp wood. An otherworldly sensation also emerges, akin to the shock from a gust of wind against the flesh or blowing through hair. The album’s celestial overtones point to something immense, evoking a sense of insignificance when gazing into the vast night sky.

Cymatic represents Yanling’s exploration of humility in the face of cosmic amalgamation. The album captures these transcendent images and emphasizes her visceral focus on the cyclical interior and outward impacts of sound. This emotional mark heard throughout Cymatic is further amplified by her outwardly limitless and orotund tones blending vocals with strings, echoing something like ancient messages preserved in stone over time.

The cover for the LP, created by artist Nate Flagg, points to this idea in an inscription embedded in the patterns of the artwork. Flagg’s inscription, written in an invented language composed through deep listening methods, translates to “Borne by growshrink light the body blows through the house.”

Yanling’s live premiere of Cymatic is accompanied by a four-woman choir with Annika Dörner, Hannah Endrulat, Dinah Kouyaté, and Mathilda Adamik. Together, they will collaborate on a synchronized audio-visual harmonized with the architectural beauty of the crematorium, crafted by artist Tim Novikov, along with two supporting acts on October 24th at silent green, Berlin. During this premiere, the music video for “Cymatic”, directed by Jannis Davi and Milan Friedlos, will be screened.

After its autumn release on Aurora Edition’s label, the LP’s live iteration will tour with a four-person women-led choir.

The Swiss-born Hong Kong native spent her childhood between Zurich and HK, and Zurich is where Yanling got her musical jump-start amongst the city’s local left-field dance scenes. As a resident at RSO Club in Berlin for Raster Media’s label nights, Yanling’s captivating and delicate techno-orientated DJ sets are charged with a mechanized intensity filled with bass-heavy percussions that infuse emotional power with her brand of energetic and climactic futurism.

Yanling is also the founder of Aurora Edition, the acclaimed event series for its visually accented soundscapes within landmark venues that host drone, ambient, and experimental live acts. The audience inhabits the sublimely luminous and awe-inducing settings inspired by the magnitude of cathedral architecture, languishing about to the splendor of the immersive sounds accompanied by audio-responsive visuals created in collaboration with artists. Since its inception in 2023, Aurora Edition has simultaneously transformed into the record label which sees its first release in late 2024 with Yanling’s Cymatic.

As a producer, Yanling has a hold on varying dystopian-like sonic registers, mixed with a heavy float of airy synths. In 2021 and 2023 she released Siren and Lamo with singer-songwriter Yesh, the tracks revived the antiquated myth weaving Yesh’s voice with Yanling’s futuristic treatments led by her affinity for manipulated vocal ensembles. In her live performance at Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt, Yanling absorbs space in her heavy rhythmic cues via a hypnotic display of raw instinct. With newer works shown at Theatre Gessnerallee (Zurich), soundtracks for various projects, and collaboration with Bob Kil at Museum Thorvaldsen (Copenhagen), Yanling works from a more cinematic sphere enveloped by ephemeral textures. Merging sinister effects with a particular luminosity makes Yanling’s sound boundless, carrying listeners between realms of her varying experimental productions and live performances presented in contexts that bridge sound and art.
